In the early 80's the Charvel Custom Shop guitars filled a void in the marketplace. Charvel was catering to players who wanted a refined design, while the major guitar manufacturers continued to stick to the same formula for the sole purpose of selling in volume. The vibe of these San Dimas-era Charvel Hot Rod strat-style guitars were cool finishes and/or graphics and a great neck. The beauty of a Charvel Custom Shop is that some of the original team still run the shop. One of these key people is Mike Shannon. This is the man who, along with Grover Jackson, sat down with Randy Rhodes and designed the Concorde. The first model with a neck-thru design of the Jackson Guitar Company brand.

Charvel Custom Shop - The Wood

The wood buyer for the Charvel Custom Shop is also from the original Charvel USA, San Dimas crew. The wood is hand-picked, sourced in the raw, graded, and stored on site. Each instrument starts from this wood pile to be hand-matched, and transformed into a beautiful Charvel Custom Shop guitar! This is truly a custom shop approach with time and experience as the main ingredient.

Charvel Custom Shop - The Neck

  • Compound Radius Fingerboard - Bending strings in the upper register often results in notes that do not ring clearly. This phenomenon, referred to as “fret out”, is caused by the curvature of the neck. Conversely, a neck that is too flat can be uncomfortable for chord work. Charvel Custom Shop guitars solve both problems by retaining a 12" radius in the lower positions for chording comfort and gradually flattening to a 16” radius in the high positions for clean bends. Once the frets are installed, the player still has a full fret life and great feel in every position.

  • Hand-rubbed oil finish - This signature process makes for a great, smooth feeling and fast playing neck.

  • One-piece quarter sawn Maple - The best cut to maintain the most grain strength.

  • Jumbo frets- A staple for high-performance playing. The typical nut width is 1 11/16” and the butt/pocket width is 2 1/4”; which gives you slightly more room in the upper registers for shredding guitar! Additionally, the fingerboard edges are rounded to further enhance the comfort.

  • Each GuitarHotline Charvel Custom Shop neck’s back shape is still rolled (sanded) by Mike Shannon, retaining the true feel of the original San Dimas era. This is the key difference of a Charvel Custom Shop - the real master builders are still building your guitar!

Charvel Custom Shop - The Body

The GuitarHotline Custom Shop Charvel body shape is the classic San Dimas Strat-style body with the exception of our neck joint. Our neck plate is recessed and angled, with the front side lower cutaway scalloped making total neck access clear to the last fret. This modern embellishment brings the original hot rod guitar into the 21st century.

Charvel Custom Shop - The Finish

GuitarHotline Custom Shop Charvel guitars usually have a matching headstock and pearloid neck binding. Our guitars are normally a solid color (Snow White, Ferarri Red, Sonic Blue, Surf Green, etc.). We occasionally use figured tops with a translucent finish to show off the grain pattern of the wood.

Charvel Custom Shop - The Electronics

The GuitarHoline default pickup combination is a pair of Seymour Duncan Humbuckers. The neck pickup being the Jazz (SH-2) and the bridge pickup is a Custom (SH-5). Controls consist of a three-way switch and two volumes. The volume controls have high-pass filters making the high to low volume sweep linear without diminishing the tone. This is very effective as an “old-school” channel switch when used with tube overdrive/crunch. In short, these guitars clean up very nicely when turned down without losing high-end tone.
