Custom Shop Build Overview
This Martin Custom Shop D-18 Style McGuinn 7-String Dreadnought is a rare and inspiring build featuring a unique tonal concept originally made famous by Roger McGuinn. This configuration adds a doubled high G string, delivering the shimmer and harmonic richness of a 12-string while maintaining the power and focus of a traditional dreadnought.
This particular guitar features a hand-selected Bear Claw Sitka spruce top paired with solid mahogany back and sides, personally chosen during a visit to the Martin factory. The bear claw figuring adds visual character while the Sitka top delivers clarity, headroom, and dynamic response.
Built on the classic D-18 platform, this Custom Shop instrument blends vintage-inspired tone with a distinctive layered shimmer that enhances strumming, vocal accompaniment, and open chord work.
Tone & Performance
The addition of the high octave G string introduces a natural chorus effect, enriching the tonal spectrum without overwhelming the fundamental voice of the guitar.
- Classic D-18 warmth with added harmonic shimmer
- Enhanced fullness for strumming and vocal accompaniment
- Clear note separation with a natural chorus-like effect
- Powerful projection with controlled low-end response
The result is a highly musical and inspiring instrument that stands apart from standard 6-string dreadnoughts.
