Martin Custom Shop Neck Options Explained
When ordering a Martin Custom Shop guitar, neck specifications are among the most important decisions you’ll make. Neck shape, nut width, taper, and finish all play a major role in comfort, playability, and long-term satisfaction.
Unlike standard production models, the Martin Custom Shop allows detailed control over neck feel—making it possible to tailor the instrument precisely to your hands and playing style.

Martin Custom Shop Neck Shapes
Low Profile
A modern, slim neck with a fast, comfortable feel. Easy to adapt to and ideal for players who prefer a lighter grip. Best for:
- Contemporary players
- Electric-to-acoustic crossover
- Fast lead and rhythm work
Modified Low Oval
A refined modern profile with slightly more shoulder than the Low Profile, offering added support without bulk. Best for:
- Versatile playing styles
- Long playing sessions
- Balanced comfort across genres
Modified Low Oval with High Performance Taper
One of Martin’s most popular Custom Shop necks. Comfortable near the nut, with increased string spacing as you move up the fingerboard. Best for:
- Fingerstyle and hybrid players
- Players who want precision higher up the neck
- Modern acoustic techniques
Modified V
A subtle V shape that gives the thumb a reference point without feeling sharp or extreme. Best for:
- Traditional acoustic players
- Thumb-over fretting styles
- Players who prefer some vintage influence
Authentic / Vintage Neck Profiles
Inspired by pre-war Martin guitars, these fuller necks provide a substantial, old-school feel. Best for:
- Vintage purists
- Flatpickers and strong strummers
- Players seeking traditional tone and ergonomics
Nut Width Options
Common Martin Custom Shop nut widths include:
- 1 11/16" – Traditional, fast-feeling
- 1 3/4" – Very popular for fingerstyle
- 1 13/16" – Extra room for advanced fingerstyle
- Custom widths available by request
Nut width has a major impact on left-hand comfort, especially for fingerstyle players or those with larger hands.
Neck Taper & String Spacing
Neck taper determines how the neck widens from the nut toward the body.
- Standard Taper – Familiar, balanced feel
- High Performance Taper – Wider feel higher up the neck for clarity and control
Custom Shop builds can also specify string spacing at the saddle, allowing fine-tuning for fingerstyle versus flatpicking.
Neck Construction & Materials
Neck Wood
- Select Hardwood (Mahogany) – Standard, stable, and balanced
- Spanish Cedar – Lighter weight with a vintage response
Reinforcement
- Adjustable truss rod (standard)
- Vintage-style reinforcement available for Authentic builds
Neck Finish Options
- Gloss Finish – Traditional appearance
- Satin Finish – Faster, less sticky feel
- Vintage / aged finishes for period-correct builds
How Neck Options Work with Other Custom Shop Choices
Neck specs should be chosen in context with other build elements, including:
- Martin Custom Shop Bracing Options
- Martin Custom Shop Tonewood Options
- Martin Custom Shop Build Time
The right neck often depends on body size, bracing style, and playing goals—not just hand size alone.
